Barry Silverberg is a veteran nonprofit and volunteer leader whose 45-year career has engaged him in all aspects of nonprofit leadership, management, resource development, and communications. His emphasis is currently on nonprofit governance, strategic thinking, board engagement, professional
and organizational development, and public policy awareness and advocacy.

Barry founded, and is Executive Director of Nonprofit Austin and the Center for Nonprofit Studies at Austin Community. Since its start in 2000, the Center has become a leading provider of workforce development and professional learning opportunities in Central Texas. Its classes and Certificates reflect Barry’s commitment to unleashing the potential of every participant and promoting racial and social equity and justice within the nonprofit community.

Barry’s career also includes 15 years as adjunct faculty at St. Edward University teaching the New College’s Nonprofit Management and Leadership course. He was formerly the Texas Association of Nonprofit Organizations CEO; Executive Director of the American Creativity Association; and
enjoyed a 23-year career as Executive Director/ CEO of Jewish Federations in Syracuse, NY and Austin, TX.

An active coach and mentor, Barry believes change emanates from passionate individuals moved by visions and dreams. As creator, Executive Producer, and Moderator, of the Center’s Civil Society television and webcast, he focused a year on the experience of people of color in Austin. He was the Secretary of School of Thought, an international nonprofit whose online education provide courses, content, and other resources that teach creative and critical thinking skills to anyone and everyone, for free.


Barry played a pivotal role in the creation of the Texas Nonprofit Council, during his service on two Texas Legislature task forces focused on strengthening and engaging the nonprofit sector.


He has consulted with hundreds of area and state nonprofits and has been a leader in dozens of nonprofit organizations. He also shares his perspective with foreign delegations sponsored by the
United States Department of State.

Barry has a master’s degree in Jewish Communal Service from Brandeis University (1976) and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a minor in Judaic Studies (1969). Married to Marcia Lederman Silverberg for over 45 years, they have two children.
